I have been working in the survey, land development, home building and civil construction industry for over 45 years. It was during the late 1980's that I was introduced to computers and spreadsheets and realised the potential of spreadsheets in the construction industry. I then began developing Lotus 123 spreadsheets for the costing of land development and project housing construction schedules whilst working in the Development Department of one of the largest project home builders in Sydney at that time.
In the early 1990's whilst employed as Construction Manager for a development and housing company I utilised my own spreadsheets for land development feasibilities and house construction costings. Later in early 2007 whilst working for a medium sized earthmoving company in western Sydney, I began the development of a Microsoft Excel Workbook which has been updated over the past twelve years, as needs required. Today the Workbook requires basic Excel skills. The Workbook makes use of Buttons containing Macros that automatically input modules into your calculation worksheet as required. There are Macros for Pavements requiring input of thickness and estimated tonnage deliveries per day. Macros for stormwater pipes, earthworks among others. Other variables can be edited either within the module or the calculation sheet. There are seventeen modules provided with several blank custom modules that can be made by the user if required. Markups can be easily revised whilst "live graphs" show the makeup of the costs. The Workbook contains a quick and easy to use Claim Worksheet for once the Tender becomes a Contract. The video below follows the process from Creating a Tender to a Claim.
